Project Description

The local Unitarian church is one of the most iconic fortified Saxon churches. Dârjiu Church is home to a highly valuable set of mural paintings.The most important remaining fresco contains an image of a migratory Cuman wearing traditional clothing. The fresco refers to a legend about the 11th century Battle of Chiraleș, in the vicinity of Bistrița City.

The church is unique due to the fact that, within its walls, there are supply pantries in which villagers store their food. The fortification – The enclosure is square-shaped, the curtain walls are 5-meter high and are equipped with oblique protruding towers in the four corners. A sundial was added onto the southwestern tower of the fortified city in 1622
