Project name: Collective housing on Île Saint-Denis
City and Country: île Saint-Denis, France
Program: Housing, commerce, proximity services
Site area: 1,7 ha
Building surface: 16 800 m²
The project is structured and developed in 3 main parts: (1) site analysis and urban environmental assessment- studies of urban and environmental context, historical development, data collection, etc., (2) development of the urban project (UP) and (3) development of the architectural project (AP).
The urban project, with an area of 16,2 ha, is located in the center of the island île-Saint-Denis, in north of Paris, France. The project pleads for a social-environmental system that aims to balance urban, economic and social aspects of the community by developing a mixed-use neighborhood with a large number of urban functions. This diversity of programs will rhythm the neighborhood, while seeking as well to ensure a continuity between the new urban project and the residential area located in the south of the site. In this regard, an important aspect of the project is to create a residential and commercial dominant area, while reinforcing at the same time the idea of centrality within the island.
The architectural project, located in the heart of the urban project, proposes the development of a residential complex with a total area of 1.7 ha. The exercise is developed on 2 lots of 4 000 m², respectively 8 900 m², being located near to the banks of the Seine, following a transversal direction of the island Île-Saint-Denis and connected through a large central park. The choice of this particular study area underlines 2 major strategies of the urban project: on the one hand, the close proximity with the banks of the Seine and, on the other hand, the close proximity with the central park. The architectural typology brings a particular approach of housing. Starting from a base module (the equivalent of a studio), square shaped of 5.2 m per side, the project offers various apartments configurations resulted from the assembly of 2 or more base modules. This particular approach of architectural typology leads to a unique solution and configuration of the entire project.
