Mahmudia, Tucea

Mahmudia is situated on the right side of Sf. Gheorghe water channel, at the east base of Beştepe hill. It’s limits are defined by the following: noth Maliuc, east and south Murighiol and west Beştepe. The low height hills make contact with the Danube Delta. There are several fens, some with sprins and others with ground water. They represent a potential in the area development regarding tourism and sport fishing. Mahmudia is part of the Biosphere Reservation of the Danube area which is a protected area.

The resources of the Danube Delta can be used without destroying the ecosistem, by promoting a sustainable rural tourism, based on agriculture and local heritage. In a protected teritory  it becomes essential to identify the local traditions and crafts so that we can combine the specific elements of the Delta with the current necessary functionalities. The tipe of architecture that will be used must be in direct contact with the cultural and traditional heritage and the specific.

The areas that are proposed for interventions must be treated in an ecological way. The traditional architecture, the tipe of houses and constructive systems  made and important mark on the surroundings. The intervention into a such complex area must combine the actual technologies with the local traditions. The Danube Delta is one area  in which the traditional crafts can adapt to the modern needs. For that is important that we study the traditions and crafts that define the local culture.

Because of the ethnic diversity, Dobrogea has a special status that makes the identification of the traditions more difficult. In Mahmudia we have identified the traditional crafts that are still used today: house building and tatched roofs, rush plaiting, carpentry, pottery prelucrarea lutului, boat building, fish nets and painting wood icons.

The special conditions of the natural habitat have led to a strong local specific regarding tipology and architecture. The modesty of the materials is echanced by aestetics. The housed are integrating into the surroundings. They ususaly have low heights, organised on the ground floor in simple volumes. The relation between the inside and outside of the house and the diversity of the forms are related with use of the space. The overview is a main element for the aestetics of the traditional architecture in the Danube Delta and it is defined by relation between space organisation, materials roof tipe, rithm of the porch pillars.

The purpose was to create a sustainable ensemblein a contemporary way.  I want to use and adapt the elements of the traditional architecture mentioned previously arhitecturii and create an ensemble that integrates in the natural and cultural environment ofthe Danube Delta that is also consistent with the actual needs.

The site has an area thas floods . I propose that the density of the buildings is bigger near the main acces road and reduced in the flooding area with buildings with only one floor on pillars. The volumes decrease in height and dimensions from the road to the fen. The workshops are in the middle of the creating outside work and leisure spaces. This way the activities can be observed by going on a path created between tre street, the porches and the stilt houses.

09_ATELIER TAMPLARIE_A0.cdrhis ensemble will bring many benefits: ecomonic, creating jobs, cultural, by creating a space for the community through the workshops, social by creating spaces for meeting and leishure and touristic by promoting the local routes and sites.
