Creating miniature architectural designs is no easy feat. Artists pay close attention in forming intricate designs of upscale furniture, small moving parts, clear swimming pools, and even integrated lighting in order to build a realistic model. Here’s a list of some of the note-worthy modern architecture miniature pieces from artists all around the world.
Flipped Structures & Tiny Towers: Takahiro Iwasaki
Takahiro Iwasaki can make art out of the most unexpected materials, such as the tiny towers built from toothbrush bristles. Moreover, his series, “Reflection Model”, features beautiful traditional Japanese architecture created together with its reflection on the water. Much of his inspiration is inspired by the history of his hometown, Hiroshima.
Hyper realistic Architectural Models: Joshua Smith
Saying Joshua Smith’s creations are realistic is an understatement. Every small detail, from the graffiti vandals to the posters lined up on the street, is faithful to the original. He creates everything from scratch to come up with these run-down urban buildings.
Architectural Furniture: Ted Lott
Ted Lott masters the art of combining architecture and furniture to create these astonishing pieces. He utilizes the frames of wooden stools and chairs as the foundation and beautifully works his way to form the wooden buildings.
Modern Dollhouses: Miniio
These stylish contemporary dollhouses were created by Miniio, known to offer “IKEA for Barbie”. Walter Gropius, the founder of the company, originally wanted to produce high-quality children’s toys that can be enjoyed by both girls and boys.
Chillout Sessions Midcentury Modern Models: Collider
This miniature piece was initially created for use in album covers of Australia’s Ministry of Sound by Andrew van der Westhuyzen of Collider. In line with the theme, this model includes swimming pools, palm trees, and human figures hanging out by the pool.
Performing MDM Opera House Concept Model: Jie Shen
This creation by London-based architect Jie Shen explores the concept of redeveloping Marzalkowska Housing District in Warsaw, Poland. It features an opera house as the centerpiece which can be conveniently converted for various purposes such as indoor and outdoor performances, movie screenings, and other dynamic functions. The idea was that through these transformations, the historic Stalinist-era site is integrated updated with modern elements.
