Project Description

The construction began in 1493 and ended in the first half of the 16th century. The tower and small church were given their current appearance in 1677.The tower, which resembles the Clock Tower in Sighișoara (before the fire in 1676), was renovated in 1832, but was heavily damaged by the 1986 earthquake.

The tower’s enameled colored tile-roof is pyramid-shaped. In April 1714, a devastating fire destroyed most of the buildings in Saschiz, and melted the three bells of the clock tower In addition to the St. Ștefan (Stephen) fortified church, in Saschiz there were six other churches, which is why the settlement was known as Siebenkirchen (seven churches).

Where once stood a Roman basilica, a large fortified church was erected in 1493 in honor of King Stephen I of Hungary. The massive Gothic quarry stone church is reinforced with 22 buttresses. The hall is very wide and long, and the choir is closed on three sides. The choir was finished in 1496, and all construction works were completed in 1525.

The Saxon fortress was built between the 14th and 15th centuries, and had 9-m high walls. The entire ensemble was surrounded by a strong defensive wall. The fortress had six bastions and a 60-m deep well (which today is only 1-2-m deep).
